Summary

Eventify is an app concept that helps people book appointments and create events with their friends for the purpose of making it easier to have more real-life social interactions.

Task

Task Description

The task was to freely choose an area in which to carry out an ethnographic study, then create a digital prototype that provides support for any issues found. You had to involve at least one user in the ethnographic study as well as involve them in a participative design activity. The process was to result in a digital prototype that is mobile-adapted and meets the needs of or solves the problems of the users.

User Research

Ethnographic Study

The area I chose to study was what it is like to go from a "regular" job to working independently as a freelancer. Methods I used to achieve my result were shadowing to get an idea of their daily routine and identify problems that may need solving, and interview as a way to gather personal experiences from the user. The study was done on one user.

The interview handled topics like: what it’s like working from home; what’s better, what’s worse, how much they work now compared to before, how they juggle things and what their schedule is like as well as what their social life looks like.

Most important points from the interview:

  • The user found it hard to have a lack of social interactions as well as lack of co-workers. His interactions were mostly digital.
  • More pressure, less stability. Stressful because if you take a break you get no money.

In the shadowing session, I followed the participant for about 2 hours while he worked with his various sources of income. In the meantime, I tried to talk to him and identify what problems he is experiencing now compared to when he was at a regular job.

Most important points from the shadowing session:

  • He never fully gets to take a break

The Problem

The biggest problems that emerged during the course of the study were that there is a lot of stress in freelance, especially if you have difficulty with planning. It seems to be very difficult to take time off, both mentally and physically. Compared with a regular job where tasks tend to be assigned by a higher-up and where the salary is usually fixed, there is more instability in the job that the user has chosen.

Questions that arose:

  • How could the experiences of a regular job and a freelance job be made more similar?
  • In what ways can you create colleagues, like a regular job?
  • How can you plan more free time when you don’t have to keep track of work at all so you get more time to meet people in real life?

The Solution

Concept

I decided to create an app for booking social interactions with friends to help curb the feeling of not being able to take a break as well as creating a way to plan more social interactions in real life. I used the method card sorting to help decide what functions and pages were most important to include in the app design. I let the user from the ethnographic study pick out what functions he felt were most important to him and took his opinion into consideration when designing the app.

Usability Testing

I decided to do a think aloud with the user where he was made to go through the prototype with minimal directive so that I could gather information about what needed to be changed, clarified, removed and so on. The user was given the task of booking a meeting and then canceling it. The user pointed out a few things that could be improved or were unclear. I also, through watching him navigate the prototype, noticed some features that needed improvement, for example when you clicked that you wanted to participate in an event, the number of participants did not change. The issues were minimal and overall the user seemed to approve of the solution.

Final Thoughts

Involving the same user throughout and in almost every part of the whole design process was a new approach for me. I found that I quite liked working so closely with the user and receiving input every step of the way. The app design in itself could use some improvement and more functions such as a way to pool money for the events and an integrated map.
